Frequently Asked Questions

Where does your teak come from? Is it durable and sustainable?

Teak wood is a tropical hardwood that is native to several countries, however we only buy marked teak logs from a managed forest resource (teak plantations) in Indonesia. While there are many other sources of teak throughout the world, many come from untraceable sources or mismanaged forests. Teak has been used for centuries because of its durability, strength, and natural resistance to moisture, making it ideal for outdoor furniture. Teak wood is harvested from mature teak trees that are at least 15-25 years old, and carefully selected to ensure the highest quality wood. Our teak wood is SVLK certified.

What type of weather is suitable for teak?

At Woven, we consider teak wood a suitable material for indoor and outdoor use. Its natural strength and natural oil content and durability make it resistant to damage from moisture, pests, and UV exposure. However, care and maintenance are important to ensure that your teak wood furniture lasts for many years.

How do I clean and care for my teak furniture?

New sanded teak has a golden honey color that will develop a natural silver-gray patina as it ages. The change in color is purely cosmetic and does not indicate any change to the strength or durability of the wood. To maintain the original color, you can use specialized teak cleaners, such as plant safe WOCA Exterior Cleaner. Follow the directions provided by the manufacturer for the best results. Wipe down all surfaces of the teak upon receipt of your piece, including underneath the frame or table, with soapy water prior to placing the new cushions on top. This will help prevent natural teak oil from staining the cushion fabric. To clean natural teak oil from cushion fabric, quickly combine equal parts of dishwashing liquid and warm water on the stain and rinse thoroughly.

Our furniture covers and care kit are recommended with any purchase of outdoor teak wood furniture. If organic matter or debris does accumulate on your teak wood furniture, it is important to attend to it right away. Use a high-pressure hose nozzle to wash away any loose debris from the surface. Take the scrub brush and wash solution provided in our care kit and scrub the teak wood to clean the surface. Wash matter away with a hose and repeat as necessary. If any matter persists, use the sanding block to remove any stuck-on debris, being mindful to sand with the grain of wood. Once clean and dry, use the provided brush or rag to apply a layer of oil. Allow the oil to saturate the wood for 5-10 minutes, then wipe off the excess. Allow the furniture to fully dry and then cover when complete.

How does teak hold up over time?

Teak has graced outdoor spaces for generations and can and will last for decades outside. Maintenance is key in prolonging the life of your teak wood furniture. Constant exposure to sun and moisture can cause your teak wood furniture to weather and age faster (turn gray, just like us). With proper care and maintenance, your teak wood furniture will last for many years and continue to provide beauty and functionality to your outdoor living space.
